No Cut Weight Loss Surgery

In an effort to develop less invasive methods for gastric surgery, a team in New York operated on a 25-year-old graduate student without making a cut. Using new tools developed specifically for this procedure, the patients stomach was accessed via her throat.

The procedure is part of a trend to make surgery less painful and invasive, miniĀmize risks and speed recovery. Many operĀations that once required big incisions are now done through small slits, with cameras inserted to let surgeons see what they are doing on video screens.

It appears that only two surgeries have been performed in the U.S. so far, but nearly one hundred in Mexico and Europe. The procedure is still in the trail phase and they are seeking FDA approval.
